Dakota stared at the other girl, perplexed and slightly offended at the idea that she wanted the other student to write back instead of speaking. Honestly! Not being able to talk didn't mean she couldn't hear, either! Come to think of it, whoever this was was eyeing her scarf in a way that suggested she was interested in it, and the last thing Dakota needed right now was to explain that away again. Maybe she should just--
She stiffened at the other girl's snarky response. Little red? Little red?! This student barely looked any taller than she was! There was no way she was letting her get away with that! Pulling her notepad close to her face, Dakota scratched away at it furiously, practically shoving it towards the older student when she had finished writing.
Alright miss rainbow hair, not only do I have a problem with it, I'm going to do something about it, too.
Though her handwriting was clear, the words made deep indents in the paper, hinting at just how frustrated she really was. Abruptly, when she had given the other student enough time to read her message, she snatched as much of the candy as she could in one swipe and stood, storming towards the boy who had been scared off. Tapping him on the shoulder, he turned around in surprise, only to have Dakota shove the sweets into his hands.
Stalking back to the couch without so much as glancing at the older student, Dakota sat down, grabbed the newspaper, and held the crossword section close to her face as though examining it. Truthfully, though, she was using it to hide her victorious smile.

ooh!! yeah i imagine that being in the same year ALEX RICHARD POWELL and dakota would be in a lot of the same classes and whatnot. and wow they are pretty alike arent they!! they're both pretty sweet (well... at least, sometimes, on dakota's end) and both enjoy a good puzzle!! i bet they could connect pretty well over that! does alex like music at all? dakota adores any kind of music, so that's another thing they could possibly bond over! and ooh alex loves the outdoors doesnt he? dakota loves nature, so i could see them hanging out relaxing on the grounds together on the weekends or during free periods!! what do you think?

Dakota had decided to use her free period to catch up on her crosswords. Newspaper and pen in hand and ipod playing classical music in her ears, she sat on one of the couches in the school living room and set to work. She was not there for very long before she was startled from her reverie by another student falling rather stupendously onto the couch next to her. Dakota stared in astonishment as the young woman set aside her guitar and began chowing down on sweets.
She took out her earbuds just in time to hear another student questioning the other girl. When she scared him off with what could only be described as a terrifying look, Dakota glared at the couch's other occupant. Taking out her notepad from the pocket of her jeans, she quickly flipped to a blank page and scribbled down a few sentences. Elbowing the other student slightly harder than was necessary to get her attention, she showed her what she had written:
Was that really necessary? All he did was ask a question. One that I'm curious to know the answer to as well.
Dakota continued to gaze coldly at the other student, wondering whether she should indeed have been in class.

SERIOUS FLIRTATION FROM JADEN ABADEER OOH HEHE!! dakota would definitely be interested in finding out more about this mysterious fourth year who plays guitar!! the fact they both love music makes it even better!! dakota is sure to sass jaden at first, tho if she becomes enamored with her she'll be all flustered around her AND LITTLE JAM SESSIONS YES TBH THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN OH though dakota is pretty abysmal at violin tbh and even more so when she gets nervous which she likely would be around jaden eventually so!! i hope jaden is prepared for that!!

AAH SORRY IM HAVING TROUBLE FORMING COHERENT SENTENCES BECAUSE IM OVERCOME BY THaT BEING SO CUTE YES YES YES tbh i cant see them being enemies at all either?? like maybe theres a little uneasiness w/ dakota's snark but!! i still think theyd get along really well!! and honestly her daredevil side would probably be met w/ a bit of sass but also with enthusiasm?? since dakota is so self confident she'd be like HEH, YEAH YOU THINK YOU CAN DO THAT, ALRIGHT, PROVE IT BUT ILL DO IT TOO kind of thing sorta?? idk

friends are a common enough occurrence for dakota. she's really quite sweet and easy to get along with (when she isnt in one of her bad moods at least!!) and so can usually make friends fairly easily. she carries around a pen and notepad to communicate, though, so it might be harder (but certainly not impossible!!) for illiterate characters to form a close friendship with her. anyone who shares her love for music gains immediate brownie points!! her friends would also have to be okay with her A+ snark level, though she is a bit less sassy when she's in a good mood, her sharp words (so to speak) are still present.
dakota having enemies is definitely a possibility, ranging from friendly rivalries to full-blown adversaries. dakota can be very sarcastic and passive-aggressive when she's not feeling the greatest, which can annoy some people. she tends to dislike people who use self-deprecating humor or joke about self harm, so doing either of those will land nearly anyone on her bad side- not necessarily permanently, but it does leave a sour taste in her mouh. she also is, for the most part, pretty moral, so things like committing crimes are a no-no!!
dakota is not actively seeking out romance, but that doesn't mean she isn't interested in it. she is bisexual, and tends to be shy around anyone she might be interested in. dakota has an infatuation with mysterious and enigmatic people, though her fascination with such people can sometimes fade once she figures them out and there's no more puzzle to solve.
Though for the most part she tries to keep an optimistic outlook on the world, Dakota often finds herself plagued by sour moods. Once a master of sarcasm and sass, losing her voice has reduced her methods of snark to glaring angrily at people who offend her, and perhaps kicking them in the shins (as that tends to be all she can reach).
When not feeling murderous, Dakota can actually be quite pleasant and even sweet. In such cheerful states, she will, if possible, play some sort of music. Creating sound is her passion, though only since losing her voice has she picked up other forms of music besides singing, and so is somewhat abysmal at it. Though it does not bother her much, her off-tune notes might be annoying to some.
Intelligent and curious, Dakota has always been interested in puzzles and riddles. However, her stubborn refusal to give up on a mystery without solving it, and even her willfulness in general can sometimes put her in over her head. Her complete overconfidence does nothing to help in such situations, sometimes even getting her in more trouble.
biography
More than anything as a child, Dakota loved to sing. Both her mother and father nurtured her love for music, and Dakota's vocal skills flourished. As she grew she learned not only to sing well, but to speak well; her wit was especially sharp for her age. She was perhaps a bit spoiled, and acted like it, but those around her didn't seem to mind too much.
Finding out about her mutation was a terrible experience. Dakota was singing at a picnic for one of her friends when she lost control of her voice. The sound waves amplified so much that it caused both her and her friend physical pain. Her friend reacted in self-defense, lashing out at her to stop the noise. Which would have not caused serious damage, had he not been holding a fork.
Dakota's vocal chords were severely injured in the accident, rendering her mute. Embarrassed, Dakota took to wearing scarves to cover the scars on her neck, if only to prevent people from asking about it. More importantly, however, she set out to learn more about what had caused the accident in the first place. When she realized she might be a mutant, Dakota delved into more research.
Eventually, she discovered Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. After some convincing, her parents allowed her to go to Eriwall to attend the school.
POWERS
Dakota has what has been classified as 'sound manipulation', that is, the ability to modifiy the loudness, pitch, and tone of sounds. Doing so has several practical uses, such as amplifying or muting a sound, which have their own uses, and even, at advanced levels, creating constructs out of sound.
Specifically, these constructs would take the form of concentrated bolts or beams of sound that, at certain frequencies, could pierce or otherwise damage usually solid objects. Less concentrated waves would have the ability to create a physical force, pushing/propelling either Dakota herself or other objects/people.
Such constructs would require not only extreme effort and concentration depending on their size and form, but also constant sound to hold their shape. Dakota, however, is very far from this skill level, and can currently only make the most basic of modifications.
Since she cannot speak, Dakota must rely on other sources of sound to use her powers. Usually, she carries around a violin to create sound to manipulate. It should also be said that she can only alter sounds which originate within several feet of her body. In effect, this means that unless she is very close to something that is making noise, she can generally only manipulate sound she herself creates.
At her current skill level, Dakota has the ability to:
Increase/decrease the volume, or loudnesss of a sound.

Dakota can increase a pitch up to that as used by a bat's sonar, and decrease a pitch to around the low end of human hearing, such as very low bass. Altering anything beyond this range has the same risks as manipulating a volume beyond her learned ranges.
